Local One's Active Ballot Club
What is ABC?
ABC is the voluntary, non-partisan, legislative and political arm of the UFCW International. It is an educational organization within the union, composed of UFCW members who have joined together to exercise their full rights and responsibilities as citizens.
What does ABC do?
ABC allows the UFCW to support candidates on the local, state and federal levels who hold the needs of workers as a high priority. It helps balance the political power of big business and the working people of America. ABC also furthers the cause of labor and serves as the working peoples’ defense against large corporations or anti-worker groups that may be attempting to dominate the political system.
I pay union dues. Why doesn't the union use dues to support politicians and other political campaigns?
By law, union dues cannot be used to support candidates in federal elections. All of Local One's political funding for federal candidates comes from ABC donations.
Why should unions be involved in politics?
A: Being active in the political system is the only way unions can protect gains won at the bargaining table from being erased by local, state and federal legislation. Legislative action can affect workers as much as their collective bargaining agreement.
Will ABC tell me how to vote?
No, ABC will provide information members, so candidates who support labor issues will be elected to office.
Unions usually support Democrats. I am a Republican and do not want to make contributions to a fund that will never support a Republican.
Remember, ABC is a non-partisan fund. Money is distributed to politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, who support the interests of workers. Local One believes each issue and every candidate should be viewed on an individual basis. That is why we have supported both Democrats and Republicans. The local’s membership consists of Republicans, Democrats and Independents. The local can best represent the membership by supporting candidates, regardless of their political affiliation, who hold strongly to issues important to the membership.
